Shoo-Fly Pie
 
 
½ cup brown sugar
¾ cup sifted flour
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons shortening
¼ teaspoon soda
¼ cup hot water
¼ cup molasses
Pastry shell (unbaked)

Combine flour, sugar, salt and shortening, and blend until the consistency of crumbs. Dissolve soda in hot  water and add to molasses. Pour molasses mixture in pastry shell and top with crumbs. Bake in a hot oven (400° F.) for ten minutes, then reduce heat to 350° F., and bake 25 minutes, or until firm.
