Date-Nut Bread
 
 
1 T butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. soda
2  ¼ cups sifted flour
Filling:
1 1/2 cups boiling water

1 1/2 cups dates, cut in pieces
Pour boiling water over dates. Let stand until cool. Cream butter and sugar, add egg and vanilla.  Add date mixture alternately with sifted dry ingredients,.  Add nuts.  Bake at 325o for 1 hour 15 minutes in well greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.  Top should be firm when done, and toothpick inserted should come out clean.
