| 1 – 12 ounce package chopped dates
1 cup hot water 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup shortening 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 1¾ cups flour 2 tablespoons cocoa ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup nuts, chopped 6 ounces chocolate chips In a small bowl, combine dates, hot water
and baking soda. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, cream shortening, sugar
and eggs until fluffy. Combine flour, cocoa and salt. Add alternately with
dates to the creamed mixture. Blend well. Add vanilla. Pour into a greased
9x13 inch pan. Sprinkle top with nuts and chocolate chips. Bake for 40-45
minutes at 350° F. Serve warm with ice cream.
