Apple Walnut Bread
 
 
1½ cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon allspice
1½ cups whole wheat flour 
1 cup chopped walnuts 
¾ cup chopped apple 
1 egg, slightly beaten
¾ cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1½ cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons shortening, melted

Mix and sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices. Add whole wheat flour, walnuts and apple. Combine egg, brown sugar, buttermilk and melted shortening and add, enough to moisten dry ingredients. Do not beat. Turn into loaf pan and bake in moderate oven (350° F.) 1 hour.
